Farmers at the Ashaiman Irrigation site have expressed worry over the continued loss of their farmlands due to massive encroachment by developers.
According to Citi News’ Elvis Washington, about 11 farmers out of 22 at the small irrigation dam site at the Ashaiman Irrigation Development Project site have been thrown out of business due to developers taking over their farm lands.
The site, which covers an area of 152 hectares, is facing imminent closure due to the activities of encroachers, who have invaded the area and turned the canals into refuse dumps.
Rice and vegetable farmers at the site have been battling with private individuals whom on constant bases are building on their farmlands.
The Acting officer in charge of the Ashaiman irrigation site, Charles Adeku, bemoaned the failure of the authorities to protect the people.
“If the security people do not protect us, what can we do? We have released even the very people who are to protect us are encouraging the encroachment, “he lamented.
He disclosed that the sewage from the houses are polluting the main dam and also canals used for watering plants.
