Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has bemoaned the effect of communal clashes on the educational sector in Alavanyo and Nkonya in the Volta Region.
“The economy in the area is suffering; our children cannot go to school. I hear that some schools have been destroyed and therefore we are even destroying the future generation through these conflicts,” he lamented.
[contextly_sidebar id=”heK1y9ZaRhYfgENuS7MLPY7M7qySxJ4H”]He said government will vehemently oppose any move to turn the Nkonya-Alavanyo conflict into a civil unrest.
Several people have died while others have lost their properties in a sixty-year-old land dispute between the two feuding towns.
However, government’s efforts to end the seeming recurring clashes have proved futile but, the Vice President has assured that government will crash any attempt to escalate the conflict.
Addressing a meeting of chiefs and leaders from the Alavanyo-Nkonyo area, the Vice President said government will do all it can to end the decades old conflicts saying “the state will not allow one set of people in a community to subdue another set through the cause of arm because we have more arms than you have.”
He said the Police and other security teams that have been detached to the area “have more arms than the people in the community. They are better trained too,” while cautioning the perpetrators of the conflict “disabuse their minds because we will not allow it to happen.”
Mr. Amissah-Arthur further bemoaned the continuous commitment of resources by government to contain the conflicts. in the area saying “the cost of the conflict is rather to high.”
In a related development, the Ankobeahene of Nkonya Wurupong in the Volta Region, Nana Ampem Darko, has insisted that not all recorded crimes in the area are related to the Nkonya and Alavanyo dispute.
Speaking at a crunch meeting to find a lasting solution to the Nkonya-Alavanyo conflict in Kpando, Nana Ampem Darko said the killings and atrocities within the two towns should not be purely viewed as criminal activities and that sometimes, they are not linked at all to the troubles there.
