The West have been accused of failing to help Nigeria and other West African nations to halt the deadly operations of Islamist militant group, Boko Haram.

The Catholic Archbishop of Jos in central Nigeria, Ignatius Kaigama said the same commitment and solidarity which was shown to France following the terrorist attacks which claimed 17 lives must be shown to Nigeria.

Over the weekend, some 23 persons were killed by three female suicide bombers, including a 10-year-old.

Amnesty International also reported that Boko Haram has killed over 2,000 civilians in Baga and its surrounding towns.

Amnesty International said: “This marks a disturbing and bloody escalation of Boko Haram’s ongoing onslaught against the civilian population” while urging Boko Haram “to stop the senseless killing of civilians and called on the Nigerian government to take measures to protect its citizens.”

Archbishop Kaigama pointed out that Nigeria’s military does not have the capacity to win the fight against Boko Haram.

He is quoted by the BBC as saying, “it is a monumental tragedy. It has saddened all of Nigeria. But… we seem to be helpless. Because if we could stop Boko Haram, we would have done it right away. But they continue to attack, and kill and capture territories… with such impunity.”

According to him, Nigeria is in dire need of support from the West to protect citizens from the threats of Boko Haram.
