The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has called on the government to live up to its promise of saving it from the brunt of the inconsistent power supply in the country.

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) resumed the load shedding exercise to both households and industries in the new year after reducing the rate of power cuts across the country during the Christmas festivities.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MALl9mvmSrc8jfS0iEpmD0mfHNNA1M4S”]And following the resumption of the exercise, the AGI has challenged the government to keep its word of cushioning the effect on the industries, who had recently been added to the load shedding schedule.

The Executive Director of the association Seth Twum-Akwaboah told Citi News in an interview:” We were informed last year and that’s when we got alarmed that industry is now being included in the load shedding. It was discussed with us so it is not something new to us and it is something that we have no choice than to cope with.

“We appreciate that the water level of the Akosombo Dam is not so good and there is a reason why we are having all these challenges. But the point is that the assurance was given that some badges would be added so that we could have a lot more energy supply Not necessarily from the dam but from Tema plants and other sources to augment what we have now to reduce the pressure on the dam, and also ensure that at least we have some reasonable level of supply.

Mr. Twum-Akwaboah added that they expected to see signs of the implementation of “in the first quarter. What time in the first quarter, I don’t know but that is something we all need to follow up and be sure that eventually it happens.”

Their call comes on the back of one by the the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) who have urged the government to improve the energy situation in other to avert the continuous collapse of manufacturing companies in the country.

The first Vice President of the chamber, Dr. Prosper Adablah told Citi News: “we cannot predict what the will happen in mid-year if the energy crisis is not resolved. It is bad for business because our companies are collapsing and they will keep on collapsing until the situation is resolved.”
