The Ghana Prisons Service has embarked on farming and other projects aimed at providing adequate food to feed inmates in prisons across the country.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service Vitalis Aryeh, told Citi News that the service is strongly embarked in farming amongst others to feed the inmates and also aid exportation

“Apart from prisons at the center of cities and towns that don’t have lands, any other prisons that have land around it is used by its inmates to farm,” he disclosed.

Mr Aryeh bemoaned that the monies received by the prison service is  inadequate, adding “ the service currently receives one cedi 80 pesewas which is used to cater for the three square meals daily for each inmate and it does little to cater for the nutritional value of the inmates,”he added.

He disclosed that the services also seek external support to help in feeding the  inmates adding “we also ask relatives of inmates and philanthropic organizations to come to the aid of the inmates with cooked food.”

The PRO further added that the service had requested from  the government to acquire machinery to augment the efforts of some prisons at meeting the nutritional needs of the inmates.

“Now we are asking government to give us more machinery to invade in commercial activities, because if we get more tractors we have vast lands to farm and feed the inmates an even export for the country.”
