The overpass at the West Hills Mall at Dunkonah near Weija in Accra, could pose a serious threat to commuters as cracks were spotted in the pillars supporting it, less than two months after it was launched.

The overpass is frequently used due to the popularity of the new Mall and sprawling residential areas around the area and Kasoa, but is under threat of collapse as a result of the number of motorists who use the structure.

President Mahama, accompanied by the visiting Togolese President, Faure Gnassingbe, cut the tape to mark the official launch of the Mall in Novermber.

However, the stonework of the structure appears to have been worn down by wind and rain.

Checks have also revealed that the iron bars on the pillars had become exposed by parts of the concrete breaking off.

The project, the first of its kind in Ghana, cost about $8.8 million, and is being constructed by High Brains Construction, a Ghanaian company accomplished in high profile construction assignments.

The West Hills Mall is jointly owned by Delico Property Development Limited, through which South African property development giant Atterbury participates in the project, and Social Security & National Investment Trust (SSNIT), with Delico holding a 60% stake in the mall while SSNIT commands 40%.
