A leading member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni has charged government to turn the country’s economy around.
[contextly_sidebar id=”MFBWlTJaXyoY0ZBzbAYOgsrbgMdQPd11″]The former NDC legislator for the Kumbungu constituency in the Northern Region admitted that 2014 was a tough year for Ghana’s economy, a situation he said deepened the hardship inflicted on majority of Ghanaians.
In a Citi News interview, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni who is currently the Secretary General of the African Carribean and Pacific group (ACP) said government should take proactive steps to revive the economy.
He bemoaned the increasing youth unemployment and other challenges affecting national development.
Lawyer Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni tasked government to move beyond considering cocoa as the lifeblood of the local economy by encouraging industrialization as best means of creating wealth.
“We are still a one commodity economy: cocoa is still the lifeblood of our economy and we are exporting raw beans,” he lamented.
According him, “This is not the age, we need to do a lot more value addition: we need to encourage industrialization and is the only way we can create more wealth, is the only way we can create more employment for our people and also ensure income redistribution in fairness to everybody.”
He however, lauded government’s request for financial support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to fix the ailing economy.
