Two Ivorians in trouble over ‘wee’

Briefing journalists on the arrest yesterday, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Commissioner of Police (COP) Prosper Kwame Agblor, said on December 30, 2014, personnel of the drug law enforcement unit of the CID headquarters, with assistance from the Greater Accra Regional Police, got a tip-off that some Ivorian nationals were in Ghana to purchase cannabis for export to Cote d’Ivoire.

He said the police mounted surveillance on the suspects who were on board a Mercedes Benz, with Ivorian registration number 2965E10L.

They were arrested driving the vehicle at Weija SCC on the way to Kasoa in the Central Region.

COP Agblor said a search was conducted in the boot and engine compartments of the vehicle but nothing of evidential purpose was found.

Thereafter, he said, the suspects together with the vehicle were taken to the CID headquarters for further investigations.

COP Agblor said at the CID headquarters, the suspects confessed to the crime and indicated that the exhibit was concealed under the vehicle.

“They led the police to the vehicle, pointed and opened the hidden compartments of the vehicle. After a thorough search in the vehicle, 119 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis were found concealed in four false compartments constructed under the floor of the driver’s and passenger’s seats,” he said.

COP Agblor said in their caution statements, the suspects admitted having concealed the exhibits which they were transporting to Cote d’Ivoire.

However, he said, the suspects were unable to lead the police to their source of supply, and indicated that the exhibits had been wax-sealed in their presence and would be taken to the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) for examination and report.
