The Eastern Regional Police Command has issued a directive for the immediate disbandment of a vigilante group at Ofoase in the Eastern Region.

[contextly_sidebar id=”hZ3oWwO6VW2Ydqh85awuLZB2FB9HB2t3″]According to the Police, the group, which has been nicknamed ‘Ofoase Boko Haram,’ has no legal mandate to operate in the area.

Community leaders in Ofoase in the Eastern Region formed the group to prevent children in the area from gambling and attending wake-keeping instead of going to school.

The group has however denied any linkage with the militant group Boko Haram based in Nigeria.

Speaking to Citi News, the Police Public Relations Officer in the Eastern Region, ASP Nketiah Yeboah said the Police will make sure the group is dissolved.

He explained that “nobody has the power to maintain law and order without recourse to police, ministry of interior or without basing it on the laws of the land. So anything you will do that you think it is right but it is not based on law you commit offence.”

“It is for the Police to enforce the law. If you say you are helping the Police, you shouldn’t be a judge. Nobody apart from the law court has the power to punish and nobody or a group of persons have authority to promulgate laws,” he added.
