Photographers mesmerized the Internet in 2014 with beautiful series that put soulful subjects into focus.

We saw the softer sides of pit bulls, drooled over knitted foods softer than a favorite blanket and peeked into the secretly lonely lives of the pop culture world’s biggest crime fighters.

Take a look back at our favorite viral photo series of 2014.

1. “My Favorite Part of Myself: An Ode to a Girl’s Best Friend” by Maria Sharp

Sharp knew she had limited time left with her beloved dog Chubby. To say goodbye, she enlisted the help of fellow photographer Suzanne Price for a photo series of the two spending a few final moments together.

  • 2. “Super Flamands” by Sacha Goldberger

Goldberger’s series imagines superheroes and sci-fi icons as subjects in 16th century Flemish paintings.
    3. “If I Had Known My Mother Back Then” by Danielle Delph
    Danielle-delph
In this affectionate series, Delph edited herself into images of her mother as a young girl. Through these photo manipulations, she wonders if she and her mother would have been friends had they grown up at the same time.
    4. “Old Faithful” by Peter Thorne

Sick of the onslaught of cute puppy photos swirling around the Internet, Thorne set out to photograph the beauty of senior dogs in all their greying glory.

    5. “Beauty and Wisdom” by Robbie Kaye
    Elizabeth
Kaye was nearing her 50th birthday when she began her photographic study of women in their 70s and older. She photographed and interviewed dozens of women across the United States, and will soon release a documentary about her experience.
    6. “Lego Travelers”

Romero doesn’t own a smartphone, but he’s made an entire series of observing people on theirs, specifically when in the company of others.

For those who’d rather eat their sweaters than wear them, Dance and Sykes’ soft and fuzzy take on “food photography” is exactly what you need.

    9. “Harp + Lola” by Rebecca Leimbach
    Bath
Leimbach documents her young daughter’s sweet friendship with the family dog, Lola. The inseparable pair do just about everything together, including dress up, storytime and, occasionally, bathtime.

When Mantesso’s ex-wife moved her furniture from the apartment they’d shared, he was left with only their dog Jimmy Choo and an empty apartment. 176,000 followers later, Mantesso’s doodles surrounding his bull terrier are an adorable Internet sensation.
    11. “Mystery Meat” by Peter Augustus
    Bltmysterymeatpeteraugustus
Augustus takes the mystery out of what’s really lurking in our processed meat products, with a series that replaces bacon and chicken nuggets with pig legs and chicken feet.
