The possible occurrence of earthquakes and earth tremors in Ghana will go undetected and their magnitudes unreadable as the country’s only seismic equipment acquired in 2011 has been shut down.

[contextly_sidebar id=”tttXuecXdTwY02duh0bo3RcHAeO8HqCD”]The equipment has been shut down as a result of the decision by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to cut power supply to the Geological Survey Department.

Geological Survey Department (GSD) owes an unspecified amount of money to the ECG but as of December 2013, government had only released GH¢180,000 out of the approved GH¢300,000 to defray the debt.

According to the Director of the Department, John Agyei Duodu, GSD is cash strapped and lacks funds to support its operations.

This is not the first time the ECG has cut power to an organisation.

The ECG has been disconnecting organizations and institutions which have failed to settle their unpaid bills.

This, according to ECG is aimed at recovering all outstanding monies owed it to assist in their operation.

Notable amongst them are; the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, Kofridua Polytechnic, Kumasi Technical Institute and Konongo Odumasi Mines.
