The University for Development Studies (UDS) has directed students on the Mathematics, Science and Technology  Scholarship Scheme (MASTESS) at the school to pay the arrears of their school fees for the second semester due to government’s failure to pay up.

In a statement signed by the Dean of students, Israel K. Dzomeku, and sighted by citifmonline.com, the beneficiary students were asked to “pay the arrears of their school fees during the Second Trimester (2014/2015) registration.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”rVzHSyr1ifKI2cMLfJNQFEvFUSGcG3n8″]The move was, the statement said, as a result of the “inability of the Ghana Government to release funds for the Mathematics, Science and Technology (MASTESS) scholarship for 2013/2014 and 2014/2015

The students were also advised to make plans to pay also for the next academic year.

The MASTESS, which was instituted in 2009, was designed to provide financial support to students in order to make specialisation in Science and Technology more attractive and rewarding.

The Scheme has reportedly provided support to over 10,000  science students since its inception five years ago.

The government only recently reiterated its commitment to  education in the country and revealed that it had already invested GH¢5 billion in the sector.

“Quality education is key in deriving optimal value from Ghana’s natural resources…This is why government is investing more than five billion cedis over the period with 30 per cent of the national budget dedicated to education,” said the deputy minister in charge of tertiary education.
