The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams has been overwhelmingly elected as the party’s new National Organiser at the party’s 8th national delegates congress on Saturday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”WBCedzoea1tWm9tb8vBQvskvkMLQfSat”]Adams, who had earlier expressed confidence of victory at the congress, polled 2,543 votes and beat his only challenger, the incumbent National Organiser, Yaw Boateng Gyan by 734 votes.

Having been billed as one of most competitive positions in the elections, the margin of the victory for Adams will come as a surprise to many.

Notable among Adams’ supporters for the position was the former President and founder of the NDC, Jerry John Rawlings, who emphasized the need for Adams to be elected by the delegates to help the party regain its “lost integrity.”

“I wish I could keep him with me for us to do a lot of work together, but I think the party needs him more than I do. My integrity is still intact, it is the party that has lost its integrity or some members of the leaders that require some people like Kofi to go and increase the quality,” the former president said of Kofi Adams.

Mr. Adams’ loyalty to the NDC has been called into question and he has been accused of collaborating with the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Akufo Addo against the party.

He, however described those allegations as “cheap and defeatist” in a statement.

“The  allegations, which are being oxygen by some senior officials, including a leading parliamentarian that I have been cavorting with some members of the NPP leadership, are cowardly, cheap and defeatist and should be treated with the absolute contempt they deserve,” the statement said.

The NDC delegates also retained Johnson Asiedu Nketiah as the General Secretary of the party while Kofi Portuphy was elected the party’s National Chairman.
