Hundreds of people on Thursday embarked on a demonstration exercise to protest what they describe as deplorable nature of their roads in the region.

The demonstration was organized by a pressure group called Mass Action for Development.

Speaking to Citi News the Director of Operations for the group, Ike Apau Gyasi said the demonstration exercise was aimed at drawing government’s attention to the state of the roads in the region.

He said, “we have come to realize that Eastern Region has a lot of roads that are so bad and the President himself described the road network as very deplorable. From there, one would have thought that the president will take the initiative and have these road networks fixed.”

“The road from Suhum to Asamankese is a death trap. Recently the regional police command issued a statement to the effect that because of the bad nature of the road network in the Eastern Region, armed robbers have taken control.

He lamented that pregnant women are the most vulnerable on the road.

“If a pregnant woman has a complication and needs to be transferred to another hospital, before the person get there some even bleed to death. I think it is very deliberate; the government is taking us for granted. Eastern region is also part of the country,” he added.

Such demonstration exercise have been embarked upon in various parts in the country. Recently, some residents of Ho in the Volta Region embarked on a similar exercise.
