In a bid to clamp down on increasing terrorist activities, the Kenyan government has deregistered 510 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
The licenses of their foreign employees have been revoked while their bank accounts have also been frozen.
[contextly_sidebar id=”lhTk2ifX1lnNKRSLOHx27dKiiun2uX9f”]According to the BBC, the 510 NGOs include 15 organizations suspected of having links with terrorist groups.
Kenya in recent times has been battling with the activities of al-Shabab; an extremist, jihadist terrorist group based in Somalia.
Several lives have been lost including that of Ghana’s former chairman of the Council of State, Professor Kofi Awoonor, who was killed in the infamous Westgate Shopping attack in 2013.
Kenya is currently considering a new security bill which will support its fight against terrorist activities.
It is believed that the deregistering of the 510 NGOs is linked to the new security bill.
