The executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern Region have expressed disappointment over the endorsement of a contender in the party’s chairmanship race by some delegates in the region.

Some delegates in the region over the weekend openly tipped Kofi Portuphy as the most competent candidate for the party’s chairmanship position.

[contextly_sidebar id=”mIVSKgcAdUZks9bTYHlK7E78eExXDBwH”]Mr. Portuphy is running for the chairmanship slot with Alhaji Hudu Yahaya, Dan Abodakpi and Dr. Kwabena Adjei (incumbent chairman).

This move according to the executive members in the region is constitutionally unacceptable. They have therefore threatened to sanction the delegates involved in the act.

Speaking to Citi News the Northern Regional Secretary of the party, lawyer Abdul Rauf Halid said they were surprised by the actions of the delegates.

“We were really very shocked when we heard one constituency secretary together with one gentle man went on air and said they were speaking on behalf of all the delegates in their region,” he said.

He added that  the party’s rules frowns at such open declarations, adding  “the constitution of the party will not even allow anybody as delegate to openly come out and throw his/her weight behind any candidate that is why it is a secret ballot.”

He disclosed that the Northern regional executives disagreed with the matter

“We have distanced ourselves from that conference that was held in Tamale yesterday and we are trying to have a meeting to find out what should happen next.”

He added that the party will find appropriate measure to deal with the offenders.

“They will be disciplined so that it will not continue. No other region has come out to do what these two men as done,” he lamented.
