Ghanaians will have to wait a little longer to see if utility tariffs will be reviewed or not.
This is because the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) is yet to announce new prices for first quarter of 2015.
The PURC on September 30 announced an increment of electricity and water tariffs by 6.54 percent and 4.54 percent respectively.
[contextly_sidebar id=”sdy7nfwxYeJrGDRQVsiAm9gsZYUUy8gM”]The Commission explained that the increment was agreed on, after careful consideration of all factors which forms the basis of the Automatic Adjustment Formula.
The PURC advised Ghanaians to conserve energy and water to reduce the challenges being faced with the unreliable supply of these two essential commodities.
The public is however anticipating that a drop in the prices of crude oil will translate into a reduction in utility tariffs, but the PURC has asked the public to manage their expectations.
Speaking to Citi News, the Director of Public Affairs at the PURC, Nana Yaa Jantuah explained that the PURC has to take into consideration certain variables and parameters before taking a decision as to whether to review utility tariffs or not.
“I think we have certain variables and parameters that we use in calculating the price… there is inflation, liquidorial tax, revenue cuts etc.. We haven’t finished with that so we cannot conclude on the prices,” she explained.
She however gave the assurance that the PURC will review tariffs as soon as it has completed with its deliberation.
