The 2012 presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party, (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo will contest to lead the party in the 2016 general elections.

Nana Addo declared his intention to contest the party’s primaries for the presidential ticket on Thursday after months of reflection.

This will be the third time he will be seeking to lead the party and the country.

The 2012 presidential candidate said he made the decision because he could not ignore the calls from Ghanaians and supporters of the party to lead the party again.

Nana Addo thanked  supporters saying, “I humbled by the confidence reposed in me; and I am profoundly grateful that so many people want me to run even at the young age of 70.”

He announced that “when the party opens nominations for presidential candidate sometime this year, i shall be ready to contest the NPP presidential primaries for the 2016 general elections.”

“I have asked questions of myself and of my body; I have seen my doctors both in Ghana and in the UK; I have examined my commitment and the fire that burns in my belly with the desire to lead Ghana.” he added.

Nana Addo’s decision to contest will not come as a surprise to many since there had been media reports hinting that he would run again.

Nana Akufo Addo contested and won the primaries in 2008 and 2012 but failed to win the general elections.

In 2012 President John Mahama was declared winner of the election with 50.7% of the vote. Nana Addo received 47.74% of votes cast.

However, the NPP challenged the outcome of the 2012 presidential elections in an election petition at the Supreme Court.

The party alleged vote tampering and rigging by the Electoral Commission.
