The 2012 flagbearer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Dr. Abu Sakara has suggested that the powers of Ghana’s Presidents should be reduced.

This, he says is the only sure way to win the fight against corruption.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Zntx6U3a8aMReoLnnwBGcCFveQqsJE2S”]Many have called for a review of Ghana’s constitution on aspects pertaining to the powers of the President in the ongoing constitutional review process.

According to Abu Sakara, wielding too much power in the executive arm of government is a recipe for disaster.

He explained that, “what it boils down to is that you cannot be a player on the pitch as well as the referee without cheating for your side.”

In an interview with Citi News, Dr. Sakara further called for the creation of independent institutions to fight corruption in the country.

He stressed on the need to effectively deal with matters of corruption that it is a huge problem in the country.

Abu Sakara recommended putting in place systems which will “protect citizens from ourselves and I think the failure to recognize the need for such institutions, and the independent of such institutions is what has allowed corruption to grow.”

“So the institutions will make sure we limit the degree to which the powers of the executive can be used to dictate so many things in the process because it fuels the system of political patronage irrespective of who is in power,” he added.
