Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo has stated that the party’s fortunes are  not dependent on the failures of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government led by President John Mahama.

“I need to state here one of my fundamental believes; the NPP’s fortunes do not depend on the NDC’s failures,” he stressed.

[contextly_sidebar id=”tvBx8OLVGucQtZ5FUiLWLtsWpXTc7RJ5″]The NDC government has been widely criticized for mismanaging the economy which has forced the country to seek a three-year bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Government has also been accused of doing little to save the country from its current power crisis as well and end acts of corruption which is causing the country to lose revenue.

Speaking at the second Aliu Mahama Memorial Lectures in Accra, Nana Akufo-Addo insisted that “there is no shortcut to building a prosperous nation” and so the NPP will work hard to ensure they are voted into power to govern the nation on merit.

The two-time flagbearer of Ghana’s largest opposition said he will be happy if the NDC government implements the free Senior High School (SHS) policy which he trumpeted during the 2012 campaign in the lead up to the general elections.

According to him, although the free SHS was the brain child of the NPP, the party will be willing to share its expertise with the government on how to effectively implement the policy.

He said: “There are in this country today several people who are quite knowledgeable on the subject who spent a lot of time anticipating the various difficulties in implementing the policy. They will be glad to share their knowledge if they are asked.”

“If President Mahama is indeed introducing free SHS…I will say hallelujah and be thankful to the Almighty…it means that we all agree that it is doable and necessary,” he added.
