The Attorney General’s Department has announced that it has so far retrieved GH¢14.5 million from persons who were awarded and paid illegal monies under the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Authority (GYEEDA).
[contextly_sidebar id=”PXjMlhSUYIUBfWbaVR71yJWcvl5pG7tC”]The Deputy Attorney-General and Deputy Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine revealed this on Monday at a high-level conference on the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) in Accra.
Following the acts of corruption uncovered in the operations of GYEEDA, the President, John Mahama ordered the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to collaborate with the Finance Ministry to retrieve all monies which were illegally paid to companies and individuals.
Major contracts under GYEEDA were terminated, while all payments under the Agency were also suspended.
In an attempt to give legal backing to the operations of GYEEDA, government has laid before Parliament, the GYEEDA bill which is under consideration.
When the bill is passed, it will ensure proper oversight of the operations of the Agency.
Meanwhile, some two persons are facing prosecution for their involvement in the GYEEDA scandal.
President John Dramani Mahama has also said that over 300 individuals are being prosecuted in the country for various corrupt acts they indulged in.
“As of July 2013, over 300 individuals were on remand for corruption and related offences,” the president said.
