President John Mahama has appealed to Ghanaians to desist from labeling the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) as a corrupt institution following the conduct of its Commissioner, Lauretta Vivian Lamptey.
“We cannot afford to dismiss the entire institution as corrupt because of allegations of abuse of power that have been leveled against a single individual; allegations that are still being investigated,” he remarked.
The President explained that CHRAJ is a vital institution which has helped the country in its quest to fight corruption, therefore, it must be regarded as such.
[contextly_sidebar id=”5oPFBE1CoF08vPaltovkyS5f3gUGl7DA”]The Chief Justice is currently investigating the Commissioner of CHRAJ, Ms Lamptey who is alleged to have wasted huge sums of taxpayer’s money on rent and the renovation of her official apartment.
If found guilty, Ms Lamptey is likely to be impeached but according to her, she is innocent of all the allegations leveled against her and is certain the investigations will exonerate her.
Speaking at a High Level Conference on the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) held in Accra on Monday, President Mahama affirmed, “I have received three petitions in relation to the Commissioner of CHRAJ which I have forwarded to Her Ladyship the Chief Justice, who I am certain is working hard to deal with the matter.”
He however cautioned that the general public must base their perceptions of CHRAJ “not on gossip and rumors but on the reality of its stellar record of past performance.”
