The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has revealed that the party lost the 2004 general elections because the then General Secretary took a bribe of GH3,000 from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

[contextly_sidebar id=”YcCbrglGnuKe3EJmABgFjz4tROkyt3bl”]According to Asiedu Nketia all indications pointed to the fact that the NDC was going to win the election in 2004 but the bribe issue overturned the fortunes of the party.

Asiedu Nketia made the allegations at an election held in Wa in the Upper West Region to elect a National Women Organizer and two deputy women organizers of the party.

“In 2004 when we had only two weeks into an election everybody knew that the NDC was heading towards victory then we heard the news that the General Secretary at that time had gone to NPP to take a bribe of GH3,000 and that led us into opposition,” he added.

He advised delegates to desist from taking monies from the candidates before voting adding that “if we elect leaders on the basis of how much they can pay, when they become leaders” they will corrupt the system.

“Because each branch organizer wants to take money from constituency organizer before they vote with the claim that they will use the money to pay their campaign expenses. Then the constituency women organizers will demand something from regional women organizers so that they can also pay their debt. Then regional women organizers will also demand something from the National women organizers to also pay their debt. After they have won where will they take the money from to pay their expenses. The alien you can take money from will be the opposition party. And the opposition parties are holding big monies,” he stated.

He added that “the worst thing that can happen is to have within the national executive committee members who have compromised themselves with the opposition”.

Josiah Aryee in February 2014 threatened to sue Asiedu Nketia for defaming him.

Meanwhile Joyce Mahama Zainab emerged the new Nati0nal Women’s Organizer of the NDC.
