Government has argued that Ghana’s improvement on the world Corruption Perception Index (CPI) ranking is an indication that it is doing something right in the fight against corruption.
Despite the growing corruption perception among Ghanaians about public institutions and government, the country has improved marginally on the global corruption index.
Ghana is currently ranked 61st out of the 175 countries surveyed across the globe.
[contextly_sidebar id=”sPQOHSQdjESXi3LkPzjkaXjkF9DvuwWy”]In an interview with Citi News, a Deputy Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu said: “If you consider the fact that since 2012, our performance has been going up…there is something that we are doing right.”
He pointed that under paradigm of exposure; the more corruption is exposed, the more it gets talked about which according to him, “may create the unfortunate unintended impression that corruption is more pervasive than before but that might not be the case.”
He stressed that the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) “is a perception survey and you and I know that people’s perceptions are not necessarily reality.”
The Deputy Communications Minister said it was highly probable that Ghana’s performance on the CPI “was even much better than they highlighted in the survey.”
“But even if you go according to findings in this particular survey, one can say that there has been an improvement and if there is an improvement, it must be due to what has been done in previous years,” he added.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu assured Ghanaians that the Mahama administration is committed more than ever to fight corruption in the country.
“Government is more willing now than ever before to fight corruption and so wherever corruption occurs, government is willing to fight it,” he said.
He was however quick to add that there is a seeming heightened corruption in the country because “once government exposes and punishes people, it will just be discussed in the media and that may create a false sense of heightened or pervasive corruption which may not be the reality on the ground.”
