The Energy and Petroleum Minister, Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah has denied reports that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is for sale.

Media reports suggest that government plans to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) following a series of losses.

But speaking to Citi News, Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah said the reports are untrue and should be discounted.

[contextly_sidebar id=”L64lyhgkhHnN5PokJDJNc0mPCUBhRj5C”]“There is no truth to it at all. As a matter of fact ECG is not for sale, government has no plans of selling ECG. Our focus is to strengthen the distribution sector and ensure that they are financially strong, that everybody that owes ECG is paying it,” the Minister said.

He said government will invest $500 million in the distribution sector, to strengthen ECG.

“In that effort, we are going to really address the issue of technology, upgrading equipment. The reasons why we have losses. So if anybody goes to say that ECG is for sale it is completely not true, it is intended to scare employees,” the Minister added.

The ECG has come under criticism for what some describe as its inability to provide consistent power supply.

Government  signed onto a $498 million Millennium Challenge Corporation(MCC) contract to improve its power delivery systems but Ghanaians are still battling with inconsistent power supply.

The recent power crises bedevilling the country compelled President John Dramani Mahama to replace the former boss of the ECG, Rev. Ing. William Hutton-Mensah with Robert Dwamena, the former Director of Procurements at the ECG.

He also created a new power ministry and appointed and nominated MP for Pru East and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Dr. Kwabena Donkor to head it.
