The Kumasi High Court is expected to hear case in which Mr Ibrahim Mahama, a younger brother of President John Dramani Mahama, has sued the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Bernard Antwi-Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi for defamation on December 11, 2014
Ibrahim Mahama is seeking GH¢2 million in damages.
Mr. Antwi- Bosiako is said to have accused Mr. Mahama of being a “thief and dishonest man” who together with President Mahama, have been increasing fuel prices and hoarding the proceeds in some banks in South Africa.
Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, in his statement of claim to the Fast Track High Court in Accra, in May said, Chairman Wontumi, made the defamatory comments on March 30, 2014 at a People’s Forum at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
According to the plaintiff, the said defamatory statements were made to cause damage to his reputation.
The plaintiff, who is being represented by Mr Charles William Zwennes, is also seeking a declaration that the defamatory statements made by Mr Antwi-Bosiako were false and malicious.
Mr. Antwi Bosiako and his lawyer, Mr. Egbert Faibille were not present in court the last time the case was heard [Friday], but Mr. Faibille was represented by Mr. Kwabena Attah.
He told the court that counsel for defendant was not able to make it to court and asked for an adjournment.
The presiding judge, Mr Justice Ringo Azumah, upheld the application by counsel for the defendant and adjourned the case to December 11, 2014 for hearing.
