The UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin, has bemoaned the deliberate attempt to drag the British government into the internal politics of Ghana over the Nayele Ametefeh cocaine saga.
According to him, the UK does not have any interest in imposing specific policies or interfering in the affairs of the Ghanaian people or its government.
[contextly_sidebar id=”zenDsoV9MHHJEg1LoXdXkE8Tu4DlFQyv”]Speaking at a ceremony to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of IMANI Ghana, Jon Benjamine said: “The British government, the British High Commission and myself are entirely neutral politically, as regards to Ghana’s domestic politics and so if anyone wants to claim that we are siding with one party of the other, they will get short strife from us.”
He stressed that his outfit had every right to correct false information put out by the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) in the wake of the arrest of Ms Ametefeh in the UK for attempting to smuggle 12.5 kilograms of cocaine.
“Those who accused us of interfering in internal affairs by issuing a statement about the case, I am sorry to tell them that we have every right publicly to correct an equally public erroneous claim about our involvement in this case,” he remarked.
His comments comes on the back of recent backlash the British High Commission received when it issued a statement denying any collaboration with NACOB in the arrest of Ms Ametefeh at the Heathrow Airport on November 10.
