Over 400 workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) demonstrated on Monday, against the removal of their Managing Director (MD) William Hutton Mensah.
The protesters, who were clad in red, sung war songs and carried placards with inscriptions displaying their anger.

Speaking to Citi News, the Chairman of workers’ union, Benjamin Kanusey insisted that the ECG is not the cause of the current power crisis in the country.
He stated that Mr Hutton Mensah is a competent engineer who is capable of steering the affairs of the company.

“He is a very good man and he knows his job. We think he is here to develop the country and not to destroy the country. We are only demanding that he is reinstated,” he said.

According to Mr Kanusey, the demonstration was nationwide and the workers would take another decision if government does not reinstate the Mr Hutton Mensah.

“He is a very hardworking man. The challenges we are having is not coming from us. That is why GRIDCO and VRA are also part, if they give us power we will distribute it. This is not fair,” he continued.

He denied suggestions that their former Managing Director was influencing the demonstration and urged government to reinstate Mr Hutton Mensah.

Government last Friday dismissed Mr Hutton Mensah and appointed Mr Dwamena, the Head of Procurement of ECG to act as the company’s new head.

A statement signed by the Chief of Staff, Prosper Bani, said the former MD, Rev. Ing. William Hutton-Mensah, who is on his annual leave, is to report to the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum for re-assignment.
