A former Deputy Minister of Interior, Captain Nkrabeah Effah-Dartey (rtd) has charged government to set-up an independent probe into the circumstances surrounding the arrest of suspected cocaine courier, Nayele Ametefe.
This, he said will bring clarity to the matter and clear government’s name and its alleged involvement in the case.
Ms Ametefeh was arrested at the Heathrow airport in the United Kingdom (UK) for carrying about 12kg of cocaine in her hand luggage.
Following public outcry over how the cocaine went undetected at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) issued a statement indicating it had collaborated with UK officials on the arrest and gave the assurance the matter was still under investigation.

The President, John Mahama subsequently dissolved the governing board of NACOB.
The Communications Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has also challenged the UK government to give further details on the matter and clarify whether or not, Ms Ametefeh had in her possession, a diplomatic passport.
In an interview with Citi News over the matter, the former NACOB boss, Captain Effah-Dartey said he was convinced that the government has not been forthright on this issue hence, his call.
“The whole conduct of this woman’s case has been very, very fishy. Government has not been forthright with the people of Ghana,” he remarked.
He also accused NACOB of being “very economical with the truth” insisting that “there is more than it meets the eye.”
Effah-Dartey therefore advised that “it will be useful and helpful if government in all frankness and in all fairness can set up an independent probe into this matter.”
