A group calling itself Coalition of Unpaid Nurses will on Tuesday embark on a demonstration in Kumasi over unpaid salaries.
The nurses insist they have not received their salaries for close to 24 months.
The group which is made up of over 1,000 nurses say the situation has made life difficult for them.
[contextly_sidebar id=”u34bkG8uY98gHoVcW7fiqTFntsyoZJvz”]In an interview with Citi News, the National Coordinator for the group, Jefferson Asare-Danquah explained that since being employed by the government, they have not been paid.
“Government has employed us as nurses and we’ve been working for over 20 months and the least of us have been working for six months now without salary,” he said.
According to him, all efforts to get the matter resolved has yielded no positive results; hence, their decision to demonstrate against the government.
The nurses after the demonstration will present a petition to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong.
Asare-Danquah stated that the nurses “want him [Samuel Sarpong] to come out and receive our petition because we are not going to give the petition to any director. We are serious about what we are doing.”
Tuesday’s demonstration is also expected to be replicated in the other nine regions at a later date.
“From the Ashanti Region, we will move to the Volta Region and from there, we will move to the Northern Region,” he said.
Asare-Danquah served notice to government that the demonstration “is happening live in Kumasi. So come Tuesday, we are putting every instrument aside and we will demonstrate.”
He added that the Ashanti Regional Police Commander has been notified over the demonstration “and he has given us the go ahead to do the demonstration.”
