Government will soon be building 60 megawatts hydroelectric power plant in the Western Region to augment the current energy needs of the country.
The project which is to be completed in three years will be constructed by the China International Water and Electric Corporation with support from the ministry of Energy and Petroleum at Sekyere Himang in the Wassa East District.
The project is valued at three million US dollars. This was disclosed during a public hearing at the Wassa East District Capital Daboase.
[contextly_sidebar id=”fukRSC8TgfUeakGDczqxyggAzOpnedLd”]Representatives from the Energy Ministry, Ghana Water Company, environmental protection agency and traditional authorities from the various communities met with residents who will be affected by the project on Thursday to discuss the effects and benefits of the project.
1,500 hectors of land have been acquired by the China International water and electric corporation for the construction of which 1,650 residents will be displaced.
The seven communities which will be affected are Tsitsimhwe, Bosomase, Okyerekrom, Adukwah, Nyamebekyere and Yeriyebiahwe all in the Wassa East District of the Western Region.
Director of Power at the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum Ing. Stephen K. Doku in an interview said it is a government owned project which aims at reducing the erratic power supply in the country.
He said the ministry is working to secure fund to begin the project. He added that the affected residents will be duly compensated.
