The twelve labour unions demanding the payment of their tier two pension contributions into their registered schemes demonstrated concurrently in Accra and Kumasi to draw attention to their concerns.

Government’s attempt to solve the impasse with the unions hit a deadlock and the court will now resolve the case.

Although about 20 people started the demonstration, the march ended with over 200 demonstrators.

Addressing members after the demonstration in Accra, the Coordinator of the unions Abu Kuntilo said the demonstration was part of their strategy to get their concerns addressed.

“We have embarked on this demonstration to inform the general public about the action between us and government. Since 2010, we have been engaged in dialogue with government about the implementation of our  second tier pension schemes which we have duly registered and licensed by the National regulatory authority. The second reason is for us to use this opportunity to re-echo the awareness creation to our rank and file which we represent for them to be abreast with what is happening between us and the government.”

“Government can go ahead and say anything, we have established a roadmap which we are implementing gradually which this demonstration is part of it,” he added.

Meanwhile the commander of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno told Citi News that the demonstration was peaceful.

“They behaved very well and then they followed the arrangement that they made with us. This is a very good conduct of demonstration and we feel that others can also emulate this shining example,” he said.
