Government has called the bluff of the agitated labour unions who are expected to embark on a demonstration in Accra and Kumasi on Thursday, over their tier two pension funds.
The Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has described the intended demonstration by the 12 labour unions demanding the payment of their pension funds as “needless.”

This is despite a pending court case brought against them by the government.
The workers laid down their tools indefinitely to compel government to transfer their tier two pension funds into a privately managed account.
They were forced to call off the strike after government secured an ex parte injunction from the court.
Subsequent negotiations between the workers and government ended in a deadlock and the two have resorted to the law courts to settle the matter.
In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Iddrisu expressed surprise that although the case is in court, “they [12 Labour Unions] have chosen to declare demonstrations across parts of the country. That is needless.”
According to him, the demonstration “will not change the position of government” as they seek a statutory interpretation “as to who is right or who is wrong in the matter.”
The sector Minister served notice to the public sector workers that government “will not be stampeded into any decision on the matter and we expect that labour will respect the decision of an independent arbiter, the competent court of Ghana which is currently looking into the matter.”
