Former Mayor of Accra, Nat Nunoo Amarteifio has criticized Ghanaians for their indifferent attitude towards the preservation of iconic structures in the country.
He noted that the identity of any group of people is determined by iconic areas in history by which they can “track their lives by” but he expressed disappointment at the failure of developers to preserve such edifices.
Mr. Amartefio was commenting on the poor maintenance culture in Ghana which has led to the deterioration of certain iconic structures like the Adomi Bridge in the Eastern Region and the Tema Motorway in the Greater Accra Region.
Speaking on Citi FMs, The Big Issue, the former Accra Mayor counselled saying, “we have to guard our resources as a community. We have to decide what is important and what to preserve so that our lives can some meaning.”
According to him, he is in no way opposed to current developments on-going within the Accra Metropolis and across the nation, but opined that developments without preserving historical structures will affect future generations.
Mr. Amartefio acknowledged that new developmental projects are necessary for the progress of Ghana but however maintained that “we are careless but we are moving forward with some purpose.”
He encouraged government and social critics to “guide the steps” in putting government and public officers on their toes to protect and maintain all historical sites and edifices.
