Northern Regional chapter of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is organizing extra classes for second cycle students across the region.

This is intended to make up for the credit hours lost during the nationwide strike by the 12 labour unions including NAGRAT.

The regional Chairman, Mohammed Saani Alhassan revealed this to Citi News in Tamale on the sidelines of a two-day capacity building workshop organized for NAGRAT members who are due for promotion.

He admitted that the strike distorted the academic calendar but said government should be blamed.

“We are supposed not to have even paid for that because if you look at the issues which led to the strike it was not our doing; all the areas that under normal circumstance we should have taught the students by now that we have not being able teach them we have to find another way of teaching them those particular areas,” he said.

Mohammed Saani Alhassan advised government to quickly address the 12 labour unions grievances to avoid a possible reactivation of the suspended labour unrest.

He emphasized, “So much as I will call on my members in this part of the region and even the country at large to work assiduously towards ensuring that the performance of our students will be much desired for I call on the stakeholders in education to play well in their area.”

He explained that the workshop was meant to upgrade the skills and status quo of NAGRAT members in the region.

The participants among other topics were taught how to respond to questions from interviewers.
Resource persons including the Northern Regional Director of Education, Paul Apamga called for an end to teacher absenteeism and lateness to school.

Records have proven that the falling standard of education in the Northern Region is unpardonable.
