Electricity supply to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi and three other organisations has been disconnected for owing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) a total Gh₵784,000.
For now no major sporting activity can take place at the largest sport stadium in Ghana till the bills are settled.
The metres of the four organisations which also include the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI), Gh₵329,000; Oware Mines, Gh₵147,000 and Konongo Odumasi Mines, Gh₵94,000 are being monitored 24-hours by ECG to ensure that the metres are not tampered with.
Briefing the Daily Graphic in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Director of Communications of ECG, Mr Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, said the disconnection was part of measures to retrieve huge sums of money owed it by individuals and corporate entities.
Payment regime
ECG had instituted a payment regime for all those owing.
Under the regime, the ECG would allow the companies to pay half of their indebtedness before they would be connected and given a grace period to defray the remaining indebtedness.
Court
According to Mr Baidoo, ECG had completed discussions with the Ghana Police Service for assistance to get the debtors refusing to pay and others who might tamper with the electricity meters to secure electricity power.
Kumasi Poly
Last week power supply to the Kumasi Polytechnic was disconnected by the ECG, plunging the institution into total darkness and disrupting academic programmes.
The Kumasi Polytechnic was said to be indebted to the ECG to the tune of about GH¢3 million, being cost of power the institution had consumed since January, this year.
