The governing National Democratic Congress has said the mass protest staged by pressure group Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) was politically motivated and illegitimate.
AFAG’s demonstration dubbed “Aagbe Wͻ” [They are killing us] saw hundreds of Ghanaians join them on the streets to protest against what they called high level of corruption and economic hardship in the country.
Some leading members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) also joined the demonstration against the government on Wednesday.
[contextly_sidebar id=”tvnNJAJW6Fdh9cUEr9Ddpi47srBfJrkk”]Some of the NPP bigwigs who joined the demonstration included, MP for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, Mike Oquaye Jnr, MP for Tema West, Naa Torshie, Dan Botwe, MP for Okere and former General Secretary of the NPP, Sammy Awuku, among others.
Mr. Dan Botwe told Citi News the demonstration will certainly yield results.
“I will be surprised to hear that this won’t change anything. It should change something. We have brought to the attention of the government what is happening and there is the need for government to sit up,” he said.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Okere also complained that “things are so bad in Ghana” adding that “there is clear incompetence and I think that the government just cannot handle the management of the economy and the country. It’s clear and Ghanaians feel it. He who feels it knows it.”
But speaking on Eyewitness News, Mr. Quarshigah described the protest as illegitimate.
He said AFAG’s mass protest was not geared towards drawing government’s attention to Ghana’s economic challenges as the group purported.
“Of course… they are not legitimate and for all you care its all for the political value of it. The reason for which… AFAG, which is also noted for its noterity and lawlessness organised the demonstration which I will say for the first time some members of Parliament belonging to the NPP also joined.
