The Ashanti Regional Branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has revealed that only 40 percent of consumers in the region pay their bills regularly.

According the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Company, Erasmus Kyere the situation  is negatively impacting on their operations in the region.

The nation’s power producers and distributors have been struggling to meet the energy needs of industries, and residents despite increasing tariffs twice in 2014.

To stop consumers from illegally using power and not paying the right amount, ECG  introduced the prepaid payment system in the country.

He further revealed that debtors owing the most on the list from the respective districts will have their power disconnected.

“This week from now to Friday I’m sure you will hear a lot of those that we have brought on board because we’ve given all the districts to compile a list and come out with a hundred highest debts in the districts,” he said.

The PRO added that they  are collating the figures and “by Wednesday or Thursday at least we will have the list ready. Friday will basically be the day for monitoring. We will go round and monitor all those we have disconnected and make sure that we take action against them.”

He assured that “what we are doing now is a process, it’s a daily activity that we are embarking on and it will continue to the end of the year.”
