fulani (1)_5Outgoing Upper West Regional Minister, Dr. Avea Nsoh says the decision to tag Fulanis in the Jirapa District will pass as one of his achievements.

The tagging system of the Fulani nomads has drawn criticism from human rights activists since the Jirapa District announced it.

Critics say tagging the Fulanis is inhumane and amounts to discrimination.

Speaking to Citi News however, Dr. Nsoh rejected the criticisms saying, the decision is a way of resolving the clashes between the residents and the pastoralists.

He noted that workers in corporate Ghana, both the private and public sectors wear tags so there is nothing wrong with the tagging of Fulanis.

“It is in the context of an understanding so that we can get off this kind of problem,” he added.

According to him, the decision to tag Fulani’s should not be seen as negative but “it should be seen as a collaborative effort…we are using a more interactive and civilized activity.”

Dr. Nsoh urged Ghanaians not to compare his intended tagging project to the slave trade in colonial times because “they [colonial masters] used very crude and unorthodox ways, very crude and inhumane means to arrest people and mark them…but it is not in this respect that we are doing that.”
