Just a day after Members of Parliament (MPs) returned to the House to use their luxurious new furnishing, the chairs and tables imported from China have started breaking.

Some of the MPs on Tuesday raised questions about the quality of the furniture from China, and questioned why leadership of the House did not allow local companies to produce them.

Just a little pressure on the chairs during Wednesday’s sitting, saw some of the wheels under the swivel chairs fall off.

According to Citi News’ Umaru Sanda Amadu who was in Parliament, MP for Asukawa, Patricia Appiagyei tried to draw the attention of the Speaker by displaying one of the wheels of a broken chair in the air.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, the MP for Lower West Akim, Gifty Klenam said: “It was Shirley Ayorkor Botwe’s chair. As soon as she sat on it, it broke and I had to help her up.”

“We tried to get the Speaker’s attention but we couldn’t catch his eye so the bottom line was to get the media to report to them,” she added.

Mathew Opoku Prempeh, MP for Manhyia South on Accra based radio station Asemp FM also complained that his table had broken.

Local furniture producers have lashed out at Parliament for importing furniture from China to refurbish their chamber.

The leadership of Parliament explained that the importation was made due to the limited time it had to put the chamber in order for MPs to resume work.

The Deputy Majority Leader, Alfred Kwame Agbesi argued in an interview with Citi News that the quantity of furniture needed for the refurbishment could not have been produced on time by local furniture companies.
