Hundreds of wooden structures were on Monday pulled down in Kejetia and other surrounding areas in the central business district in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The exercise which was initiated by the task force of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) follows a directive given by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong to have the city decongested.

[contextly_sidebar id=”wPI7VKXV5T2XSxPpZ3Oj52fnZRAYCRKG”]The directive is a follow up on Saturday’s National Sanitation Day exercise aimed at further ridding the city of filth.

Citi News Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Hawa Iddrisu who was at the scene reported that “the exercise which started around 6am was headed by captain Boakye, a member of the metropolitan Security Council (MEGSEC).”

Some traders at the Afiakobi market in the Ashanti region in October 2, demonstrated against the KMA over what they described as the metropolitan assembly’s refusal to rid hawkers off the streets of the city.

Many unauthorized wooden structures erected on pavements and pedestrian walkways were pulled down.

Hawa Iddrisu observed that, hours after the demolishing exercise, some traders were spotted re-erecting new structures again.
