The Electoral Commission (EC) has asked the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to file an official complaint over reports that majority of its members have had their names removed from the voter register.

Officials of the NPP in the Eastern, Ashanti and the Western Regions have alleged that majority of their supporters may be disenfranchised  in 2016 elections after detecting that their names were not in the voters register when they checked during the just ended voter exhibition exercise.

In interview with Citi News, Director of Public Affairs at the EC, Christian Owusu Parry said the NPP should file a complaint for investigations.

[contextly_sidebar id=”uduX2ix0lN4s9hvSeQkdjVyDQm6BJONn”]”Its a party that wants to claim inclusion on behalf of some registered voters. I dont understand because it is an individual who claims he registered who showed his voters ID card and makes a claim for inclusion in the voters register. So it is not for the party to say these are my people I know registered and whose names have been taken off the voters register,” he advised.

“It is for the individuals themselves to show evidence of their registration. However if the party  has evidence that some registered names have been taken off, they can draw the Commission’s attention and the Commission can see what can be done about it,” he added.
The NPP in the Western Region clashed with the EC over alleged irregularities in the just ended voter exhibition exercise.
The party alleged that the EC issued hundreds of voter identification cards in some constituencies in the region but did not inform all interested parties about it.
The NPP had earlier blamed the EC for the low patronage of the voter register exhibition exercise.
According to the party, the EC did not consult the political parties before embarking on the exercise.Reports from some exhibition centres across the country indicated that patronage was poor.
