Pressure group Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has threatened to sue the Ghana Police Service over its decision to restrain them from staging their planned demonstration on November 6.
AFAG on October 18 announced their “aagbe wͻ” demonstration to protest against government’s “excessive abuse and misuse of state resources.”
The second reason according for the demonstration according to AFAG, is to protest government’s poor handling of the economy.
[contextly_sidebar id=”RAzFyjHNPptBvAH2uQ3v5I1o8qgbC4pd”]But the Police have urged the pressure group to postpone the demonstration because of an impending meeting of the leaders from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Accra on the same day.
Chairman of AFAG Dr. Ayew Afriyie told Citi News that they will meet with their lawyers to decide on the way forward.
“We would have to communicate our decision…to our lawyers. We are going ahead to fight for this rampant behavior of police in barring AFAG from holding mass protests,” he said.
He added that “It’s been there very often and on this occasion we will definitely go to court to determine our right and to seek our freedom. We have a meeting with our legal advisors, from that point we will take our next step. But the resolve of this group is to fight this restraining order in court.”
Dr. Afriyie said that “previous times we have not gone to court but on this occasion we are going to seek our freedom and we are going to go on the demonstration. It may not be on the 6th …we will meet the police after meeting with our lawyers.”
