The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is blaming the Electoral Commission (EC) for the low patronage of the ongoing voter register exhibition exercise.

They accuse the EC for not consulting the political parties before embarking on the exercise.

Reports from some exhibition centres across the country indicate that patronage of the exercise has been poor.

[contextly_sidebar id=”ZOOqRXbIffGaqQcCRhh46XFu1SwLmkBb”]The exercise which begun on Friday, October 24 and ends on Thursday October 30, 2014 offers an opportunity to registered voters to check and correct their data in the voters register.

It also will in turn help the EC clean the register by taking off names of unqualified people, such as minors, non-citizens, and the dead.

The NPP in a press release signed by Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, the party’s General Secretary, insisted that “an exercise of this magnitude and importance necessarily ought to have been preceded by wide consultations with political parties and other stakeholders.”

“We believe that the inability of the EC to have properly involved and consulted with all stakeholders accounts for the low levels of public awareness and participation in this important exercise,” the release stated.

They are however calling on the EC to as a matter of urgency convene an IPAC meeting to deliberate on the matter.

They are also urging Ghanaians to take a keen interest in the exercise.

“We particularly ask for the assistance of local chiefs and opinion leaders to assist and volunteer information on these matters,” they added.

In a related development, the EC is yet to publish timelines for the District Assembly Elections.
