The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North – the area where an uncompleted hotel structure collapsed , Elizabeth Sackey is blaming officials at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for the disaster.

According to her, the Local Government Ministry  should hold the AMA responsible for the disaster since they are responsible for supervising the construction of buildings.

“I will continue to tell the Mayor and the Minister for Local Government to get hold of the AMA staff first because they are there to advise and to counsel and supervise.”

“We can’t continue in this manner, what is their responsibility? If you give permit, you should be around to supervise and see exactly what is happening,” she stated.

According to her, If government had held AMA liable for the Melcom disaster, another similar incident like this wouldn’t have happened.

Authorities of the AMA have however stated that they notified the contractor working on the structure just three days ago to stop work.

Meanwhile, rescue workers are still working to find the other people trapped under the collapsed six-storey building.

The second person they managed to pull out has been confirmed dead.  It is still unclear yet how many more people are trapped under the rubble.
