Angry residents in the Kumasi Metropolis in the Ashanti Region have expressed disgust at the frequent power outages in the area.
The residents say the outages are unbearable and it is affecting their businesses.
During peak periods, some parts of the country experience power outages but according to Citi News’ Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Hawa Iddrisu, the Kumasi residents are complaining about the absence of a schedule for the power rationing.
A resident who spoke to Citi News complained saying, “they [ECG] give it to us as breakfast, lunch, supper. The way and manner these people are going about it, it’s so sad. Just now that I am speaking, it’s gone off.”
Another also said: “You can’t sleep and look at the heat and nowadays, look at how the sun is. My wife is pregnant and she can’t sleep.The heat is too much.”
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the ECG, Erasmus Kyere Baidoo has pleaded with residents to bear with them as they work round the clock to rectify the situation.
He explained that the ECG “has a shortfall and we are not able to meet all the requirement of our customers. That is the whole problem and basically, it happens in the night; between 6pm and midnight.”
Mr. Baidoo stated that the ECG needs power from the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and “unfortunately, the impact of that is the power outages that we are having.”
He optimistic that the situation will be stabilized as soon as the power generation gap is filled.
