The residents of the Tolon District of the Northern Region, live in constant fear as a result of the recent upsurge in the number of snake bites in the area.

The Director of the Ghana Health Service in the district, Hajia Sophia Mahama, has expressed concern about the increasing cases of snakebites in the area.

She revealed that the district health post continued to record the highest cases of snake bites and described the situation as a major health hazard which needed to be urgently treated.

In March, the Ministry of health announced plans to enhance the supply of snake serum to rural areas.

However, a shortage of the anti-snake bite venom in the Northern region in July had, according to doctors, resulted in many deaths from snake bites in the region.

Hajia Mahama stated the Tolon health post lacked the serum to handle the cases reported in the district, for which reason victims are usually referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).

Hajia Sophia Mahama made this known when the Member of Parliament for Tolon, Wahab Suhuyini Wumbei presented four hospital beds and an appreciable quantity of anti-snake serum to the Tolon health post.

Hajia Sophia Mahama commended the Tolon legislator for his support but made a passionate appeal to government, civil society organizations and philanthropists to assist the Tolon district health post.

She maintained that the Tolon health post needed adequate materials especially anti snake serum to save lives.

The Tolon MP, Hon. Wahab Suhuyini Wumbei said part of the common fund was used to finance the donation.

He reaffirmed his commitment to partner with other stakeholders to provide quality health care services to his constituents.

Hon. Wahab Suhuyini Wumbei also promised to deepen his collaboration with the authorities of the District Assembly to improve the living conditions of residents of Tolon.
