Two persons suspected to have masterminded an attack on the office of the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Jirapa in the Upper West region have been arrested and arraigned before the Wa circuit court.
The two accused persons, Mr. Anthony Kasambata and Desmond Danyi were arrested on Tuesday and detained until about 8pm that day but were rearrested in about an hour later and processed for the court.
The two were charged for being in the premises of the Jirapa District Assembly for unlawful purpose contrary to section 155 of Act 29/60, conspiracy to commit crime and causing unlawful damage to property belonging to the assembly.
They were however granted bail with a sum of GHC1000.00 each with a surety and will reappear in court on November 4th 2014 for hearing.
[contextly_sidebar id=”7vnnFlQlyzjQuIDC1SrABwmxeg6RbPpu”]ASP Kweku Bempah, prosecuting, told the court that on 20/10/2014, at about 3:30pm ,the accused persons together with some other youth went to the jirapa District Assembly premises with the pretext of having a meeting with the DCE, Vivian-Nelly Kunko.
He said “as soon as they entered the DCE’s office the suspects went out of the office for some red paint which they used to caused damage to the walls of the building housing the DCE , the coordinating director and other auxiliary staff of the assembly.”
He said the accused persons ransacked the DCE’s office and painted the walls with red paint and wrote profane inscriptions as well.
ASP Kwesi Bempah said the District Coordinating Director and one Timothy Torekum, a security man at the Jirapa District Assembly reported the incident to the police in Jirapa. He said the accused persons denied the offence in their caution statement.
Meanwhile the Jirapa constituency youth organizer of the NDC, Mr. Issah Tamimu, told Citi News the decision to drag the matter to court has the potential to affect the unity of the party in the constituency.
He blamed the DCE for the wrangling, saying “our efforts to sit down with the DCE to find an amicable solution to the problem has been unfruitful because she is bent destroying this party”.
He said the accused persons are frontline members of the party in good standing hence, the need to have engaged in broad- base consultation to prevent the court action.
Mr. Tamimu called on president Mahama to immediately sack Vivian-Nelly or risk losing the 2016 elections in the area.
It will be recalled that some irate youth in the Jirapa District for the past few weeks have been agitating for the removal of Vivian for her alleged bribery and for disregarding the Jirapa constituency executives of the governing NDC.
Though the DCE denied the allegation, the constituency executives jumped to support the youth group, accusing Vivian Nelly of embezzling funds for biometric registration of NDC members in the Jirapa constituency.
