Ghana is set to again, host member states in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in November to discuss the Ebola crisis in parts of the sub region.
The heads of state will evaluate ECOWAS’ response to the crisis as well as the worldwide response to the disease which has killed over 4,500 people in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.
The disease keeps spreading fast in the affected countries; Guinea, Libera and Sierra Leone, despite efforts by the international community to contain it.
President Mahama hinted of the meeting when he met some UN officials who briefed him on the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) activities in Ghana in so far.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has predicted that if efforts are not stepped up, about 20,000 people could be affected by November.
[contextly_sidebar id=”KDFwlbkQ2gOyjuIfokHeQGlLu6kg2Bzf”]He told the UNMEER team that: “We are looking to hold the heads of states summit meeting in Accra on 6th of November. We’re going to bring heads of states in to talk about what they are doing in their various countries and also get a brief from our three colleagues on what the challenges are and what some of the problems are.”
He also assured of ECOWAS commitment towards supporting Ebola stricken countries in West Africa.
“We will also continue our contributions to our sub regional solidarity fund – the ECOWAS Solidarity fund and also to get a briefing from some of the international players the CBC and others as to what we need to look at so we are planning that on the 6th it’s going to be a one day emergency summit it’s a one agenda item, Ebola the whole day,” he added.
Ghana has started air-lifting humanitarian food relief items to Ebola-hit countries.
