The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Election Committee, Alhaji Alhassan Bin-Salih has refuted claims that the October 18 Congress is likely to be postponed.

Sources from the party said that the much anticipated Congress might not come off because the party does not have funds to organise the elections.

The Electoral Commission supervising the congress has also disclosed that it has not yet received the party’s voter’s register which could impede the exercise.

But a former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, has said party members will resist any attempt to postpone the congress.

Fuming over the matter Sir John added: “I don’t want to believe that anybody in his right senses will postpone the elections which the party is poised to have on Saturday.”

The National Chairman of the Party, Paul Afoko at a press conference on Wednesday assured members of the party that the congress will come off as scheduled.

Speaking to Citi News, Alhaji Alhassan Bin-Salih said “The exercise will come off on Saturday as planned….as far as am concerned I’m not aware that this thing will be postponed or that we are not able to conduct it because of financial difficulties.”

When asked whether the party has the requisite funding to conduct the election, he said “you wait, if we don’t have money we will let you know but to the best of my knowledge we are able to conduct the exercise on Saturday.”

“Sir John is not a party to this arrangement. Since I started making arrangement for the election I haven’t spoken to Sir John and Sir john has not come to me so I don’t take what Sir John is saying,” the Election Committee Chair insisted.

On the voters register not getting to the Electoral Commission on time, Alhaji Alhassan Bin-Salih disclosed that he has been assured by his team “that everything is ready except Greater Accra and by close of today [Thursday] it will be ready.”
